Instead, continue to supervise them while they learn and develop the gagging reflex by spitting food back to the front of the mouth, or out entirely. Gagging is typically a neutral experience for babies, and they usually resume eating right after they gag! The more you allow them to practice eating various textured foods, the faster they will outgrow gagging.\u003C/span>\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know the early stages of feeding can be stressful, which is why it’s helpful to remember that babies’ primary source of nutrition should come from breast milk or formula for the first year of their lives. So, don’t worry if your baby isn’t eating much of the Finger Foods you serve during their early stages of eating, it is still giving them texture exposure and necessary practice to develop their swallowing skills for safe eating!\u003C/span>\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Finger Foods are designed to minimize the risk of choking by cutting foods to the ideal size and cooking them to a soft texture so your little one can self-feed safely. We recommend Finger Foods for babies 10 months and older, or babies who have some experience swallowing solid foods (either textured purees or baby-led weaning). Scan ingredients and nutrition labels for the \u003C/span>\u003Ca href=\"http://sugarscience.ucsf.edu/sugar-terms-101.html#.WTjRvBPyvX8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common forms of sugar\u003C/span>\u003C/a>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including evaporated cane juice, high-fructose corn syrup and fruit juice concentrate. Everyday products, such as applesauce, dried and canned fruit, pasta sauce and other condiments are all foods in which added sugars could be hiding. Make sure to compare products and select ones with the least amount of added sugar. Also, focus on consuming fresh fruits instead of fruit juice. Keep desserts and sugar-rich snacks in the house to a minimum, and if your kids are accustomed to having something sweet after dinner, consider naturally sweetened options such as fruit and oat combinations, or yogurt with honey.\u003C/span>\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cb>Drink more water. \u003C/b>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be easy to forget to drink enough water, especially when you’re running around all day. Rachael has been practicing dietetics since 2011, with the bulk of her experience in clinical nutrition at Loyola Medical Center, specializing in patients with cystic fibrosis as well as critical care nutrition related to lung disease and lung transplant. She also has experience in cardiac health and nutrition during pregnancy. Rachael received her B.S. from Saint Louis University in Missouri and completed a dietetic internship with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
